Saranac Lake, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College men's basketball team opened its season over the weekend, dropping its first two games at the North Country Invitational hosted by crosstown rival North Country Community College.
On Saturday, the Bobcats played Kennebec Valley CC to a tight game, losing by just three points by a score of 83-80. Talon Brooks (St. Petersburg, FL) and Yashiro Hurst Jr. (Muncy, IN) led the way with 26 points each while O'neil Mason (Orlando, FL) added 13 rebounds.
The score was close the whole way as the teams were separated by just a single point (49-48 in favor of the Lynx) as the Bobcats battled the whole way but came up short in the end.
Sunday's game was also a close one as the Bobcats fell 83-75 to the SUNY ESF Mighty Oaks in the consolation game of the tournament. Hurst and Brooks added 21 and 20 points, respectively, to their early season tally while fellow first year player Larenz Miller (Anchorage, AK) dropped 12 to each double digits. Senior transfer Jack Taylor (Baltimore, MD) had a solid day at both ends of the court, contributing five points, five rebounds, four assists, and three points.
For his effort and prolific scoring, Talon Brooks was named to the All-Tournamrnt team. He finished with 46 points, 15 rebounds, and four assists on the weekend.
The team is 0-2 on the young season and opens Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play on Saturday as they host Great Bay CC at 12pm noon in the Saunders Gym.
