PSC Sweeps Weekend on Home Court
Bobcats go back-to-back in YSCC league matchups
Paul Smiths, NY ~ The Paul Smith's College men's basketball team earned two important wins before going on break, defeating Southern Maine CC 84-77 on Saturday before dominating NHTI 90-68 Sunday.
Saturday's matchup against SMCC saw three Bobcats hit double digit points as Talon Brooks (St. Petersburg, FL), Yashiro Hurst Jr. (Muncy, IN), and Larenz Miller (Anchorage, AK) contributed 25, 21, and 26 points, respectively. Miller also led the way with six rebounds, three steals, and three blocks as he showcased his versatility at both ends of the court.
Sunday's win was a complete team effort as every single starter and one bench player for the hosts scored double digit points. Miller was the top point-getter with 14, followed closely by Jack Taylor (Baltimore, MD) and Leo Williams (Plattsburgh, NY) with 12, Brooks and O'neil Mason (Orlando, FL) with 11, and Hurst with 10. Hurst also led all players with seven assists as the Bobcats spread it out offensively and played terrific team ball.
"The two wins for us was huge," said senior transfer Jack Taylor. "We all know as a team how talented we are, but we had a tough non-conference stretch to start the year. We played a lot of really talented teams and battled every game but ultimately came up short in most of them."
The Bobcats started the season 1-7, but all but one of the games (the loss to NCAA Division I UAlbany) were close, averaging just a nine-point differential over the six losses. The Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) wins puts the Bobcats in third place at 3-1.
Taylor continued, speaking about the importance of a good team mentality after a tough start. "Staying together and getting a win against a talented and well coached Southern Maine team was big for us and it carried over into Sunday's game against NHTI. We are looking to keep building into two more," he added.
Head coach Tim Lamay echoed Taylor's sentiments and commented on PSC's position in the conference thus far. "I was pleased with our ability to bounce back and secure two home, conference wins over the weekend. We followed a tough battle against a talented Southern Maine team, with a balanced scoring attack on Sunday. That approach to the game, paired with execution of our game plan, ultimately led to another victory. I feel like we are in a good position as a program while we start to dive deeper into our conference schedule," said Lamay.
The Bobcats take on crosstown rival North Country Community College on Tuesday, December 2nd at 6pm. The game will be played at the Sparks Athletic Complex in Saranac Lake, NY.
