Paul Smith's College Snowshoe Team places five men in the top ten; Ellen Haas and Eliot Soderholm share victories
DAR Snowshoe Scramble 4.6 Mile Snowshoe Race
Ellen Haas earned a hard fought win in the DAR Snowshoe Scramble on Saturday (25 January) winning the 4.6 mile event in 54:20. Local competitor, Kristin Loiko placed second in 54:26, and appeared poised to take the lead several times as they crossed the 300-meter lake towards the finish line. Haas battled back to maintain the lead and held her off over the short steep hill climb to the finish.
Soderholm led the DAR Scramble from start to finish, winning in 37:25. Wes Burkin placed second in 44:03, with fellow senior Carson Wohlers placing fourth in 48:55. Sophomore runners, Caz Couble and Aidan Minihan placed 9th and 10th respectively with times of 53:31 and 54:13 respectively. Noah Keys placed 16th overall in 59:30 in his first snowshoe race ever.
For the women, Brooklynn Shumway placed 4th for the women in 1:01:43, followed by Chloe Freund (5th place) in 1:03:49, and Nat Ross (7th place) in 1:5:33.
This course featured some very hilly terrain and summited some nearby hills and peaks and passed a fire tower from year's gone by, with some nice descents to keep the runner's spirits up on this glorious day with single digit temperatures. As the runners left the forest and traversed the lake, they passed numerous ice fishermen and a crew of pond hockey players who cleared off a nice patch of very smooth ice for a day of winter enjoyment.
