Bobcats Open Conference Play with Home Victory
Paul Smiths, NY ~ The Paul Smith's Men's Basketball Team took on NHTI on Sunday, November 10th in the Saunders Sports Complex Gymnasium in their first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) match of the season. The Bobcats defeated the reigning conference champion Lynx by a score of 100-92.
It was another balanced scoring effort by the Bobcats as five players hit double digits. The team was once again led in points by junior guard Anthony Henson (Orlando, FL). Henson led the team with 31 points while senior guard Elijiah Pratt (Queens, NY) tossed in 16 points of his own. Willie Jennings IV (Hyattsville, MD), Jassen Decoste (North Miami, FL), and Zion Mifflin (Millsboro, DE) each contributed 15, 13 and 12 points, respectively. Von Dixson (Detroit, MI) also added six points in the win. Decoste earned the team's first double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Henson returns to the Bobcats after taking a year off. He was a 2022-2023 First-Team All-YSCC and won the scoring title for that season, noting that "It felt great (to be back at PSC) - it feels like I picked up where I left off."
"We are preparing by approaching every practice and game with a chip on our shoulder," said Henson.
The Bobcats have added a lot of talent to the team this season, and much of that is a testament to the recruiting of head coach Tim Lamay Jr.
"Tonight was a great test for us to see how our team stacks up against one of the YSCC's best programs," said Lamay.
"NHTI really challenged us through the whole game, but I was extremely happy with how we closed it out in the last minutes," he added.
The team jumped out to an early lead, which was quickly matched by NHTI. The game was all squared up at the halftime intermission at 37-37. About midway through the second half, the Lynx were able to get to a lead that eventually reach seven points. Late in the game, the Bobcats mounted a strong comeback and win by a final margin of eight points to earn their third victory of the campaign and first YSCC win.
"I feel like people are going to eventually notice we are serious about what we do - we're setting the standard," added Henson.
The Bobcats will host their second YSCC conference battle of the season on Wednesday against Word of Life. That game will be played in the Saunders Sports Complex at 7:00pm.
