Men's Hockey Drops Two in Capital District
The Paul Smith's College men's hockey team traveled to the capital district this past weekend in search of their first victory of the season.
The game against the University at Albany on Friday night was the best the Bobcats have looked all year. It took OT to decide the game, as the two teams combined for 10 goals in regulation. It took a fluky goal in the 3v3 OT to deny the Bobcats their first win of the season, but they still showed the UNYCHL Tier-1 Great Danes that they belong in the top division.
For the Bobcats, senior captain Gibson Gilmore (Ithaca, NY) got the Bobcats on the board in the 2nd period after a rough 1st frame that saw Albany jump out to a 2-0 lead. Assisting on the goal were Tyler Svarczkopf (Brasher Falls, NY) and Zach Thoren (Raleigh, NC). Albany then tallied two more goals before Tom Cook (Becket, MA) made it 4-2 with assists from Wyatt Krolcyzk (Varysburg, NY) and Josh Doris (Clark Mills, NY).
The 3rd period was all PSC, as the Bobcats stormed back with 3 consecutive goals within 2 minutes to grab the lead from the Great Danes. Tyler Svarczkopf, Dylan Jannarone (Brick Township, NJ), and Wyatt Krolczyk all netted their first ever collegiate goals with assists coming from Zach Thoren, Holden LaMountain (Glens Falls, NY), Gabe Smith (Queensbury, NY), and Josh Doris with two more helpers of his own. Albany leveled the game at 5 all with 15:49 left in the 3rd on a quick puck drop by the linesman which caught the Bobcats off-guard.
In Overtime, a golden opportunity turned into disappointment, as an odd-man rush the other way and a loose puck on the side of the net gave Albany the victory. Playing a solid game in net for Paul Smith's College was Axel Norbro (Vimmerby, Sweden) with 57 saves.
The next night in Schenectady against Union College, the score was more lopsided, but the outcome was the same. The Dutchmen came out strong and finished off the Bobcats by a score of 7-2. Collecting goals for the Bobcats were Holden LaMountain and Gabe Smith. Donovan Hack (Saranac, NY), Josh Doris, Dylan Jannarone, and Kolten Chotovinsky (Pembroke Pines, FL) collected assists. Jack Ruckman (Westfield, NJ) and Nick Bay (Davison, MI) split the game with 5 GA and 2 GA respectively.
